  • Region: Canterbury, NZ
  • Law: national, not regional
  • Live chat: 24/7
In short
  • Gambling law is national, so 888casino works the same in Canterbury as anywhere in New Zealand; only pokie and TAB venue policy differs by council.
  • Christchurch kept its sinking lid on pokies on 2 September 2026, with the next review due in 2029.
  • Recreational winnings are not taxed in NZ, and the 12% duty falls on the operator, not on you.

If 888casino will not load or a payment is declined in Canterbury

Nothing in Canterbury blocks 888casino. No council or regional rule sits between a player and the site, so a failure is almost always a network, device or bank matter. Work through these in order.

  1. Test the connection.

Type 888casino.com yourself, then try mobile data. If it opens there, the fault is your home line or router. The is it down page has the full self-check.

  2. Look at the payment, not the site.

Many New Zealand banks code gambling card payments as cash advances, which brings a fee near NZ$5 and interest straight away. Some banks refuse them outright. Try another method from your cashier list. The payment methods page explains what is on offer.

  3. Do not repeat a declined payment.

Check your bank app and the cashier history first.

  4. Ask 24/7 live chat.

Chat is the one support channel 888casino lists for players. Have the time and method ready.

888 Casino and gambling rules in Canterbury, New Zealand

National rules versus council Class 4 policies

The Gambling Act 2003 sorts gambling into four classes by stakes and risk. Class 4 means a gaming machine outside a casino, the pokies in pubs and clubs, and only corporate societies running them for community purposes may hold a licence. Casinos and lotteries sit in other classes.

Where a council comes in is the venue. Before a society can apply to the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) for a Class 4 licence, the council must consent under its own venue policy. Consent alone does not guarantee the licence.

Online casinos fall under a separate law, the Online Casino Gambling Act 2026, and councils have no part in it. A player in Rangiora and one in Queenstown face the same rules for 888casino.

Christchurch City Council: the sinking lid and the 2 September 2026 rollover

The policy has been in place since 2004, and the council says it has not consented to any new pokie venue or extra machines since then.

  • 74Class 4 venues, down from 159 in December 2004
  • 1,228machines running in February 2026 (1,240 permitted)
  • 2.9machines per 1,000 residents, against 2.6 nationally
  • NZ$99.7mpokie losses in the 2025 calendar year

A sinking lid means the number only falls: no added venues or machines, no relocation. Clubs may merge, up to 18 machines. The council cannot close or move an existing venue, so the count drops only when one shuts of its own accord. Standalone TAB venues are allowed, subject to the District Plan.

A review ran in 2026, with a public check-in from 13 May to 14 June and a workshop on 11 August. On 2 September 2026 the council voted 14 to 0 to drop the plan for a formal consultation and keep the policy without amendment for a further three years. The next review starts in 2029.

Selwyn, Waimakariri, Ashburton and Timaru policies

  • Hard cap

    Selwyn

A district-wide cap of 124 machines. No new venues in Living, Residential or Settlement zones, and a venue may relocate only if its machine count stays the same. The council says the cap is reached. Policy approved July 2022, review date July 2025.

  • Ratio cap

    Waimakariri

One machine per 260 residents aged 18 and over, and none in Residential Zones. A venue may relocate to replace an existing one. Applications are publicly notified and decided by the Hearings Committee. Adopted 4 October 2022, review date 4 October 2025.

  • Venue cap

    Ashburton

Adopted 17 December 2025, review 2028. Not a sinking lid: new venues are allowed, up to 20 Class 4 venues in the district, in the Business Zone and in areas of deprivation decile 7 or lower. A new venue may have 5 machines. Standalone TAB venues are not permitted.

  • Permissive

    Timaru

Adopted 6 December 2022. New venues are allowed in Commercial zones, 200 m from residential land in Timaru township, with up to 7 machines each. A 2026 review proposes raising that to 9, and submissions closed on 7 September 2026.

Two gaps. Selwyn and Waimakariri passed their 2025 review dates, and the councils' pages do not show whether they were reviewed or rolled over, so these are the versions still published. Timaru's 2026 outcome is not confirmed. Hurunui, Kaikoura, Mackenzie and Waimate were not checked.

DIA figures at 30 September 2024, the latest list that could be opened. Waitaki, which straddles Canterbury and Otago, is left out. Christchurch has since moved to 74 venues and 1,228 machines.

Nationally there were 948 venues and 13,613 machines in the April to June 2026 quarter, with machine profits of NZ$271.5m, about NZ$19,949 per machine. The DIA dashboard gives no Canterbury figure for it.

Casinos in Canterbury: Christchurch's land-based casino

New Zealand has five operating casinos, in Auckland, Hamilton, Christchurch, Dunedin and Queenstown, and Canterbury has one: Christchurch's land-based casino. Its own site lists 32 table games and more than 450 gaming machines, open from midday to 1am, and to 3am on Friday and Saturday.

Each casino needs a venue licence and an operator's licence from the Gambling Commission, which also sets the conditions. DIA inspectors monitor compliance. DIA also states that no new casino venue licences will be issued under the Gambling Act 2003, so Canterbury will not get a second one.

Gambling tax in Canterbury: your winnings and the operator's duty

  • Players

Inland Revenue says winnings from a raffle, Lotto or a prize draw are not taxable, and it lists gambling winnings among payments you need not report. Recreational winnings are not taxed in New Zealand, and that is the same in Canterbury as elsewhere. The exception is prize money earned as part of a taxable activity.

  • Offshore operators

Since 1 July 2024, offshore operators registered or liable to register for GST pay 12% of their profit from New Zealand players, meaning amounts received minus prizes paid out. Inland Revenue now calls this online gambling duty. It is an operator tax and does not reduce your payout.

Pokies in a Christchurch pub carry a different tax, gaming machine duty of 20% of profit plus a problem gambling levy. None of this varies by region.

Canterbury questions

Is 888casino different for players in Canterbury?

No. Gambling law is national, and 888casino has no regional sites, accounts or cashiers. A player in Timaru sees the same lobby, account currencies (USD, EUR, GBP or CAD) and cashier list as anyone else in New Zealand. Councils only decide where pokies and TAB venues may operate.

Can new pokie venues open in Christchurch?

Not under the current policy. Christchurch runs a sinking lid on Class 4 machines: no new venues, no extra machines, no relocation. On 2 September 2026 the council voted 14 to 0 to keep it for three more years, with the next review in 2029.

How many pokie machines are there in Canterbury?

Adding the nine Canterbury councils in the DIA list for 30 September 2024 gives 138 venues and 1,948 machines, 1,240 of them in Christchurch City. Canterbury is not a reporting unit, so that total is our own sum. Christchurch had 1,228 machines in 74 venues in February 2026.

Do I pay tax on 888casino winnings if I live in Canterbury?

Inland Revenue treats recreational gambling winnings as not taxable, in every region. The 12% duty on offshore operators is charged on the operator's profit from New Zealand players, not on your payout. If gambling is your business, ask an accountant.

What is the age limit at the Christchurch casino?

Patrons must be 20 to enter Canterbury's only land-based casino, and DIA says no new casino venue licences will be issued. 888casino is separate and sets its own minimum age of 18.

My card payment to 888casino was declined from a Canterbury bank. Why?

Most often the bank. Many NZ banks code gambling card payments as cash advances (fee near NZ$5), and some refuse them through fraud filters. Try another cashier method and see the payments page.

Where can I get free gambling help in Christchurch?

The Gambling Helpline is free and runs 24 hours a day. The Problem Gambling Foundation has an office in Linwood with free counselling and weekday duty counsellors; its contact details are on pgf.nz.
